The Scholar is a comedy in two acts by John Baldwin Buckstone (1802-1879)[1].

The original text

First performed at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in July, 1835. First performed in News York at Wallack's Theatre in 1854.

Published in London by William Strange in 1835 and as No 834 of Dick's Standard Plays in [183-?] and in New York by O.A. Roorbach [186-?]

Performance history in South Africa

1870: Performed by the Young Men's Institute and Club Dramatic Company, Cape Town, on 2 September with The Waterman (Dibdin), as a benefit evening for Miss De Courtney.

1870: Performed by the Young Men's Institute and Club Dramatic Company, Cape Town, on 19 December as "Sick Benefit" for T. Brazier, with A Terrible Tinker (Williams).
