The Sandbox is a one-act play written by Edward Albee (born 1928) in 1959. The first performance of this play was April 15, 1960 in the Jazz Gallery in New York City. Albee is an American playwright who is known for works such as The Zoo Story (1958), The Sandbox (1959), Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962). The Sandbox is approximately 15 minutes long and involves direct address by the actors to the audience, their acknowledgment that they are performers in a play, and the offering of cues to the musician. The play received an almost universally negative reception, as critics attacked the confusing, absurdist plot.

Presented in Afrikaans, titled Die Sandkis, by the Wellingtonse Onderwyskollege-Toneelvereniging at the ATKV Nasionale Toneelfees ("ATKV Amateur Play Competion") in the Bloemfontein Civic Theatre, November 1972, directed by Herman Pretorius, starring Elsa Engelbrecht, Desiree Fourie, Edelweiss du Toit, Johan Burger and John du Toit.
