The Sacrifice of Kreli is a bilingual (English and Xhosa) play by Fatima Dike.

The original text

The play is about the clash between the British and the amaGcakela in 1885. Published in Theatre One, edited by Stephen Gray, 1978.

South African performances

1976: First performed at the The Space (Cape Town) in 1976 by the Sechaba Theatre Company, directed by Rob Amato and Makwedini Mtsaka with Mzwandile Ngxangane, Nopinkie Ngxangane, Thoko Ntshinga, Nathi Rula, Sam Phillips, Tiny Skefile, Chris Baskiti, Peter Fourie, Mabentsu Gomo, Joe Hartzenburg, Makgale Mahopo, Makwedini Mtsaka, Zandile Mxaku and Bryant Tindleni. Design by Hildur Amato and stage management by Tony Scholtz.

This production also played at The Market Theatre later that year, where Barney Simon took it over and smoothed off any rough edges. Voted Best New Play in 1976, the production was also shown on T.V.

1987: Presented by Sechaba, directed by Makwedini Mtsaka, produced by Rob Amato at the Market Theatre, Johannesburg.

2001: A new version premiéred by New Africa Theatre at the Baxter Theatre.
