The Queen and the Rebels (La regina e gli insorti), by Ugo Betti (1892-1953). Betti was an Italian judge, better known as an author, who is considered by many the greatest Italian playwright next to Pirandello. A drama set in WWII.

First published in Italian in 1949, the English translation in 1956.

Performance history in South Africa

First produced in South Africa in 1957 by the Johannesburg Reps, directed by Clifford Williams with Sonia Dresdel.

Presented by CAPAB in Afrikaans in January 1967, directed by Anna Neethling-Pohl.

A production in Afrikaans (Die Koningin en die Rebelle, translated by Alewyn Lee) was directed by William Egan for PACOFS in 1974, starring, Jannie Gildenhuys, Estelle de Waal, Wim Vorster.
