The Prince of West End Avenue is a one-man play by Kerry Shale (1958-)[1], based on the novel by Alan Isler (1934–2010)[].

The original text

The Prince of West End Avenue was originally written as a novel by Alan Isler and published in 1994 by Bridge Works Publishers. Set in the Emma Lazarus retirement home in uptown Manhattan, where the Jewish inmates embark on a chaotic, bitchy production of Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Translations and adaptations

The novel was adapted as a one-man performance piece by Terry Shale and performed with Shale playing more than 14 characters. Given a staged reading at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, it went on to performances all over the world, including the 1999 Sydney Festival.
