The original text
First performed at the Strand Theatre, London, on 31 October 1860. Published as The Post-boy by Thomas Hailes Lacy in 1861 and later also by Samuel French. (French's Acting edition.) [c.1870]
Translations and adaptations
Performance history in South Africa
1877: Probably performed in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, by Luscombe Searelle and his company on 24 September. Actually, according to Bosman, 1980: p. 360, the company did a play billed as Grandfather's Darling, or The Post-boy) as partner piece to The Loan of a Lover (Planché). Bosman most probably conflated the titles of Gurney's one-act play Grandfather's Darling with that of Craven's play, and that both plays were done that night.
