The original text
Described as a "Nigger Burlesque" by an unnamed author (as cited in F.C.L. Bosman, 1980: p. 264), it was apparently performed in blackface in South Africa. No other trace of such a song or burlesque has yet been found.

Performance history in South Africa
It is first mentioned as part of the repertoire of the Young Men’s Institute Amateur Christy’s in 1869, when they performed it in the Garrison Theatre, Cape Town, as part of an evening's entertainment in collaboration with the Lanarkshire Dramatic Club.
