The original text
Described as a "Nigger Burlesque" by an unnamed author (as cited in F.C.L. Bosman, 1980: p. 264), it was apparently performed in blackface in South Africa. No other trace of such a song or burlesque has yet been found.

1869: Performed in the Garrison Theatre, Cape Town, as part of an evening's entertainment by the Amateur Christy's and the Lanarkshire Dramatic Club.
