The original text
The play was specifically written for the young actor and comedian James Welch, and first performed at the Avenue Theatre in London in 1898, becoming a staple part of Welch's initial repertoire.

Performance history in South Africa
1903: Performed by the James Welch Company as part of a season of plays that also included The New Clown, Cousin Kate (Howard) and My Arful Valet (Mortimer).
1904: The James Welch Company returned to the Opera House, Cape Town at the beginning of th year for another short season with the four plays.
