The Goldfish

The Goldfish is a one-act play by Isobel Andrews (1905-1990)[1]

The original text

First performed in 1947 by the Wellington Thespians as part of a week-long season of Andrews' plays, it won the Dairy Exporter Cup in 1948 for being the best play written by a New Zealander. Its publication by Harrap in the collection The best one-act plays of 1948–49 led to numerous productions abroad.

Also published as an Acting Edition (no. 908) by Samuel French in 1949.

Performance history in South Africa

1960: Staged by the newly formed Libertas Theatre Club (Libertas Teaterklub) in the Denneoord Saal, Stellenbosch, in September 1960. Directed by Jane Turner, with Mary Brooke, Jennifer Ellis, Jill Gould, Max Elstein, Johanna Friederici, Jean Krige, Klaus von Lieres, Bobby Ohlson and Cecile Elstein, it was one of three one-act plays performed that evening for the inauguration of the club. (The other plays were Die Vreemde Besoeker and Onderdrukte Begeertes‎‎.)
