Founded in Nieu Bethesda by Idil Sheard, of the Nieu-Bethesda Arts Festival Association, in 2009. It took place annually in October.

In 2011 however, they lost their main sponsorship, and it was not hosted in 2012. In 2013 Darryl Earl David of Booktown Richmond began to host a new Fugard Festival in Richmond, back to back with the the JM Coetzee Festival.
