The Fence (2003) is a one-man show about gay issues and specifically "gay bashing", written by Peter Hayes. It was inspired by the notorious case of the gay American university student Matthew Shepard (21), who was tortured and murdered in Wyoming in 1998 [1].

Performance history in South Africa

First performed, starring Peter Hayes and directed by Jacqui Singer, in 2003 in the Studio at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town. The same production was later staged in the Montecasino Theatre in Johannesburg.
