The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-moon Marigolds (1964) by American playwright, children's novelist, and educator Paul Zindel (1936-2003). The play revolves around the dysfunctional family consisting of single mother Beatrice and her two daughters, Ruth and Tillie, who try to cope with their abysmal status in life.

Performance history in South Africa

Presented by PACT Drama in September 1971, produced by Leonard Schach, starring Marjorie Gordon, Janice Honeyman, Kerry Arnell, Wilma Stockenström, Elizabeth Rae. Decor by Richard Cook.

Presented by PACOFS in 1974, directed by Ernst Eloff, starring Elize Cawood and Annelize van der Ryst.

Milnerton Players, 1991

Produced by Framesby High School, Port Elizabeth, at the 2011 Vryfees.

Translations and adaptations

Translated into Afrikaans by Robert Mohr, titled Die Effek van Gammastrale op Goudgeel Afrikaners. Directed by Mohr for a performance in the Little Theatre, Cape Town in 197? starring Karin Theron, Marga van Rooy, Mary Dreyer, Reza de Wet and Angelique Rockas. Decor designed by Peter Krummeck, lighting by Pip Marshall. The stage manager was Marcel van Heerden.

In 1987 Juanita Swanepoel directed a Universiteitsteater Stellenbosch production starring Louise van Zyl, Veronica Lotz, Amor Engelbrecht, Christa de Jager and Ina Vermeulen. Roelof Temmingh composed the music.
