Contents
The original text
Inspired by real events, the play is set in the spring 1944, and tells of seven Soviet soldiers captured and stripped naked and abandoned in the locked empty cellar of a monastery in southern Poland. Deprived of all ties to their world, the prisoners redefine their concepts of order and human nature, resorting to murder and cannibalism.
Developed through staged readings and various workshops in the USA (2010-2011), then performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and in London by Stripped Down Productions in 2014, directed by Joao de Sousa.
The text was first published by Indie Theatre Now 2011
Translations and adaptations
Translated into Afrikaans as Die Rypmaakkamer by Frans Swart.
Performance history in South Africa
2019: First performed in Afrikaans as Die Rypmaakkamer by Lefra Produksies at the Market Theatre (7-30 June) . It then went to the Vrystaat Kunstefees in Bloemfontein (2 -6 Julie). Directed by Frans Swart with Anele Situlweni, David Konrad, Dirk Joubert, Gregg Pettigrew, Mauritz Badenhorst, Nathan Hammond and Zack Mtombeni.
