Performance history in South Africa

1957: Often produced in South Africa. The first production was at the Brooke Theatre in May 1957, directed by Sandy Wilson, starring Ivan Berold, June Hern, Shirley Hepburn, Maureen Adair and Bruce Anderson with sets and costumes by Pamela Lewis and Heather MacDonald-Rouse, and musical direction by Gertrude Walsh.

1969: Produced by Australian producer Noel Tovey [2], staged by the Academy Theatre at the Brooke Theatre with Jo-Ann Pezarro and Richard Loring. The cast also included seven British artists as well as South African performers Gail Williamson, Olive King, Trevor Wayne. Costumes by Pat Slavin.

1980: Directed by Noël Roos for University Theatre Stellenbosch in the H.B. Thom Theatre in October 1980, starring, among others, Natalia de Rocha and Joanie Combrink.

1981: Staged by the Port Elizabeth Gilbert & Sullivan Society in 1981.
