The Banker's Daughter is a comedy by Bronson Howard (1842-1908)[1].


The original text

Originally written by Bronson Howard as a drama in five acts and six tableaux called Lilian's Last Love, performed in 1873, then revised it and called it The Banker's Daughter, or Lilian's Last Love (or simply The Banker's Daughter). This version performed in the USA in 1878.

Translations and adaptations

Adapted for the English stage by James Albery (1838-1889)[2], it was performed in London as The Old Love and the New, also in 1878. This was the version also performed elsewhere in the British Empire over the next three decades or so.

Filmed in 1914 as The Banker's Daughter, directed by William F. Haddock and Edward M. Roskam[3]

Performance history in South Africa

1884: Performed as The Old Love and the New in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, by the lessee Henry Harper and a company he had got together in England, led by H.C. Sidney (playing "John Stratton" in this case) It was part of a season of plays that had opened on 18th June.

1892: Performed as The Old Love and the New in the Vaudeville Theatre, Cape Town, by the visiting Emilie Bevan Comedy Company as part of a three-and-a-half month season of 20 plays which began on 8 August. H.C. Sidney
