Biography

Born Susan-René Gustafson in the Durbanville area in 1980, she matriculated in 1998 and completed a BA(Drama) degree in 2001 at the Stellenbosch Drama Department, specialising in the technical course.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

While a student at Stellenbosch she worked on a number of major departmental productions over the three years of her course, directed by prominent directors from the industry, including Jan and the Playstation (directed by Chris Vorster, 1999), The Crucible (directed by Blaise Koch, 1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (directed by Shirley Johnston, 2000), Macbeth (directed by Johan Esterhuizen, 2000), Vieux Carré (directed by Blaise Koch, 2000), Panty-mime (created and directed by Blaise Koch, 2000), Waarom Strelitzias Nie Kan Vlieg Nie (directed by Johan Esterhuizen, 2001), SA Rock Alternatief (created and directed by Royston Stoffels, 2001) and Keely and Du (directed by Zoettje Hofmeyr, 2001).

In this period she also did some professional work, such as working as venue manager for the Woordfees in Stellenbosch (2000 and 2001) and as a dresser for the production of Straus, Strings and Strudel at the Oude Libertas Theatre in Stellenbosch.
