St Joseph’s Marist College

St Joseph’s Marist College is a Catholic school in in Rondebosch, Cape Town.

Also referred to in some sources as St Joseph's Academy

Not to be confused with a number of St Joseph's Catholic schools in various parts of South Africa

History

The College was founded in the mid 19th century (possibly as St Joseph's Academy) and has become part of a global network of 800 Marist schools located in 77 countries around the world which educates close to 500 000 children, and is one of 5 Marist schools in South Africa. These schools fall under the auspices of the Marist Brothers, a Roman Catholic Order of Brothers, originally founded by St Marcellin Champagnat, in 1817.

Contribution to South African theatre, film, media and performance

Besides the contributions made by alumni of the College over the years, the Academy has, from its inception, on occasion presented plays and other forms as entertainment.

For example, during October of 1869 the pupils of the St Joseph's Academy put on an "entertainment" in the Catholic Hall, Cape Town, performing Cherry Bounce (Raymond) and The Nervous Man and the Man of Nerve (Bernard). The performers named include Master Kearns, Master Early, Master Coughlin, Master Mulhival, Master Mc Auliffe and Master Murray.
