Spotlight Theatre was founded byCecilia Sonnenberg and René Ahrenson. Its first production was The Taming of the Shrew at Maynardville in February 1956 (Leslie French).
During the Second World War they did numerous play readings in the Electricity House Theatre in Strand Street, Cape Town.
