Southern African is at times employed as an adjective when discussing cultural and other activities that reach beyond the borders of a particular country, espcially in South Africa. Often done for political reasons, to avoid the accusation of parochialism - especially so in the politically volatile 1970s and 1980s.

Besides South Africa itself, the countries referred to would include Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, etc.
