An NB note on Bibliographic Conventions

Please note that - in this list - personalities are listed alphabetically here according to their last name (or surname).

This is done in accordance with traditional bibliographic practice, to simplify manual searches. However, the links in the various entries give personalities in the normal order (first name, surname/last name) Thus for example the South African playwright's name would appear as Athol Fugard in an entry about his play Boesman and Lena (or an entry about the Market Theatre), but is listed here under F as Fugard, Athol (and also in the section entitled Bibliography on South African Theatre). However, this too may be clicked on as a link to the entry on Fugard.

Also note that all surnames (or last names) consisting of two or three words (e.g. names preceded by Da, De, De La, Du, Le, St, Van, Van Den, Van Der, Von, etc) appear under the first word in this listing, i.e. under "Du" for "Du Plessis", "Le" for "Le Roux", etc.

Finally, in cases where two people share exactly the same name(s) and surname, there will be one entry and one listing in the Index, with two sections - one on each person. However, should there be any differences (in the spelling of a name for instance), a separate entry will be created.

A note on language conventions

Please note that ESAT employs British usage, so spelling and punctuation in English would normally follow that convention. For example, the abbreviations for "mister", "mistress", "doctor", etc. are written Mr, Mrs, Dr not Mr., Mrs. or Dr. as found in American usage.

The list

The alphabetical list - click on the appropriate letter to find the last name (surname) you are seeking:

In some cases the entries under a particular letter of the alphabet have been further sub-divided.
