Some of the most crucial information on South African cultural life is to be found in the numerous journals, magazines, newspapers etc. published in the country since the 17th century.

Below is an index to South African journals, magazines and newspapers, click on the appropriate link to find the journal or newspaper you are looking for. The list occasionally also includes relevant international journals that pay substantial attention to South African theatre and performance matters.

PLEASE NOTE: These publications are arranged alphabetically according to the title of the publication. In accordance with normal bibliographic usage, in cases where the titles contain one of the initial articles ("A", "An", or "The"), the items are listed alphabetically according to the word following that initial article, though the title is given as it stands. (E.g. The Argus would appear as The Argus, not Argus, The, but will be arranged alphabetically under "A"). In the case of Afrikaans the articles in question are " 'n " or " Die ", and in the case of Dutch "Een", "Di", "Die", "Den" or "Het".)
