The South African Commercial Advertiser was the first independent newspaper in South Africa, founded and edited by Thomas Pringle and John Fairbairn, and printed by George Greig. First published in Cape Town on 7 January 1824, twice banned by Lord Charles Somerset (5 May 1824 to 31 August 1825; 10 March 1827 to 1828), it survived through a number of mergers and name changes till 1879.

A valuable source on 19th century Cape Town politics, life and culture.
