[[The South African Commercial Advertiser]] was the first independent newspaper in South Africa, founded and edited by [[Thomas Pringle]] and [[John Fairbairn]], and printed by George Greig. First published in Cape Town on 7 January 1824, twice banned by  Lord Charles Somerset (5 May 1824 to 31 August 1825; 10 March 1827 to 1828), it survived trhough a number of mergers and name changes till 1879.
