The South African Association of Theatre Managements (SAATM) was established early in 1956 as an organisation intended to safeguard standards and nurture good practices in the theatre. The first meeting was attended by Brian Brooke, Leonard Schach, Margaret Inglis, Leon Gluckman, Anthony Farmer for the Johannesburg Reps, P.P.B. Breytenbach for the NTO and Percy Tucker for Show Services. Michal Grobbelaar was chairman of the SAATM from 1970 to 1982 when Des Lindberg took over.

He remained the chairman until they disbanded.
