(1932-2007) Teacher, poet, novelist, critic and cultural leader, editor of New Classic, a forum for black writers, involved as editor in the theatre journal S’ketsh and director for some years of FUBA (Federated Union of Black Artists). Noted for his writings on black art and culture, and in particular for the provocative statement that “’theatre’ is not part of our [i.e. African] vocabulary” (*** in S’ketsh ****). His published poetry collections include Hurry up to It! (1975), The Blues is You in Me (1976), The Soweto I Love (1977), Children of the Earth (1983) and Selected Poems (1984). His novels are A Ride in the Whirlwind (1981) and Rainbow Journey (1996). Died: 9 January 2007
