The Simon van der Stel Festival was an annual public event in Stellenbosch, held on Die Braak ("the common") in the centre of town, from 1967 to 2000, to celebrate the birthday celebration of the town's founder, Governor Simon van der Stel. Taking the form of a pageant, it culminated in a symbolic "parrot shooting" competition. Celebrated from 1967 to 2000.
