Biography
Training
Studied Drama at the University of Stellenbosch under Robert Mohr and Babs Laker. He graduated in 1959.
Career
He first worked for Volksteater. In 1961 he became a member of the NTO Youth Drama group. From 1963 onwards he acted on a regular basis for CAPAB, PACT and PACOFS.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
He translated A Midsummer Night's Dream into Afrikaans, with the title Somernagdroom; Dagboek van ‘n Waansinnige (Diary of a Madman) by Nikolai Gogol; Medea; translated into Afrikaans and adapted for the stage a short story by Thomas Hardy, The Three Strangers as Die Drie Vreemdelinge; translated What Men Live By by Virginia Church as Daarvan Leef die Mens. He translated works by G.R. Crosher and Gordon Daviot as 'n Maaltyd vir die Student and Onthou vir Caesar respectively. His translation of Our Town entitled Ons Dorp was produced by SUKOVS in 1976.
As a student he had a role in Robert Mohr's production of Mother Courage (1958).
He acted in Die Gebreekte Kruik (PACT, 1963); Die Renosters, 1963; Montserrat; Die Skuld van Oedipus, 1963; Twaalfde Nag (as Sebastiaan for PACT 1964); Hansie die Hanslam, 1969; Bart Nel (CAPAB 1972); Die Blindes, 1970 and 1973; So Long vir Johnny, 1974; Piekniek op die Slagveld, 1974: Die Geldpot in 1980.
Other productions include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Under Milk Wood, Kinkels innie Kabel, Hamlet, Die Huweliksbedrog.
He wrote the children’s play Die Towerboek van Kammalielieland.
He played in the film My Naam is Dingetjie.
