Rock art can be found across a wide geographical and temporal spread of cultures and have been seen to mark territory, to record historical events or stories or to help enact rituals. Some art seems to depict real events whilst many other examples are apparently entirely abstract.

They consititute the earliest records of performances among humans, and as such are fundamental to the early history of theatre and performance. They are notably important in Africa and Southern Africa, as records of the occurrance and form of performances among the San.
