Rita Elferink. (1910-2002) Journalist, critic, radio announcer and translator.

Biography

Born in Ceres, Cape on 19 February 1910. She passed away in Stellenbosch on 17 July 2002. She was married to Ulrich Gerryts.

Training

She studied at Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town and later did courses in art and archaeology in Amsterdam.

Career

In the 1930s she was a journalist for Die Vaderland, before becoming a radio journalist, working on school and chldren's radio abroad.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

In 1959 returned to the Cape and became art and theatre reviewer for the SABC as well as doing reviews for Die Burger on occasion. She became a well-known figure at all arts events and in cultural circles in the region.

Her best known translation is of Mozart's opera The Magic Flute (as Die Towerfluit). She also translated Huis Clos and La Folle de Chaillot into Afrikaans.
