(18*-19*) An Afrikaans church minister and champion of the Afrikaans-Dutch language, he was also founder and leader of the society Onze Taal ("Our Language") in Bloemfontein in 1908. The society contributed greatly to cultural life, and the development of Afrikaans theatre in the city when it established a theatre-division and became explicitly pro-Afrikaans.
