Czech and Austrian novelist, playwright, and poet Pavel Kohout's (born 1928) most notable play, based on the short story Thought by Leonid Andreyev.

The original text

The English version opened on Broadway in the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in 1976.

Translated into English by Herbert Berghof and Laurence Luckinbill.

Translated into Afrikaans as Arme Moordenaar by Merwe Scholtz.

Performance history in South Africa

Arme Moordenaar was presented by KRUIK in March 1974, directed by Pieter Fourie starring Pieter Geldenhuys, Cobus Rossouw, Pieter Joubert, Sandra Kotzé, Johan Malherbe, Raymond Davies, Jan Prinsloo, Grethe-Marie Fox, Louise Mollett-Prinsloo and Liz Dick. Designs by Pieter de Swardt, costumes by Sandra Kotzé. The stage managers were Mavis Lilenstein and Pieter de Swardt.

Performed in English for CAPAB in 1981 under the direction of Pieter Fourie starring Don Maguire, Michael Atkinson, Roger Dwyer, Diane Wilson, Neville Thomas, Marko van der Colff, Russel Savadier, Clare Stopford, Madeleine Rose, Mary Dreyer, Chris Baadjies and Paul Smith. Decor by Pieter de Swardt, costumes by Penny Simpson, lighting by Leon Benzakein.
