Czech and Austrian novelist, playwright, and poet Pavel Kohout's (born 1928) most notable play, based on the short story Thought by Leonid Andreyev.

The English version opened on Broadway in Ethel Barrymore Theatre in 1976.

Translkated into English by Herbert Berghof and Laurence Luckinbill.

Translated into Afrikaans as Arme Moordenaar by Merwe Scholtz.

Performance history in South Africa

Arme Moordenaar first produced by CAPAB March 1974, stage manager Mavis Lilenstein.

Performed in English for CAPAB in 1981 under the direction of Pieter Fourie starring Don maguire, Michael Atkinson, Roger Dwyer, Diane Wilson, Neville thomas, Marko van der Colff, Russel savadier, Clae Stopford, Madeleine rose, [[Mary Dreyer, Chris Baadjies and Paul Smith. Decor by Pieter de Swardt, costumes by Penny Simpson, lighting by Leon Benzekein.
