Although the word plaza derives from plaza a Spanish word related to "field" which describes an open urban public space, such as a city square, it has been quite popular in South Africa as the name of a cinema or bioscope.

The Plaza Kinema,

An art deco cinema seating 816 people, designed by the firms Kallenbach, Kennedy and Furner and Greatbach and Timlin for Kinemas Limited, completed 1928. **



The Plaza Theatre, Johannesburg

A Modern Movement style movie theatre designed by Stanley Furner and opened in 1931. ** PLAZA, The, Johannesburg. Situated in Rissik Street. ACT brought out Sir Edmund Hillary to give lectures at the Plaza in 1955. **** (Tucker, 1997)
