Peter Kleinschmidt

Peter Kleinschmidt [1] (1940-) is an influential and controversial director.

Biography

Born in Germany, he was brought to South Africa in 1962 by Donald Inskip to work with the Department of Speech and Drama at the University of Cape Town. He would go on to do work for a number of other companies, notably the state-funded performing arts councils. He later married equally controversial South African writer, director and actress Mitzi Booysen.

Productions in South Africa

His first production was Ionesco’s Rhinoceros with the students of UCT at the Little Theatre in 1963. He directed The Birds at the Little Theatre in August 1965 and Ubu Roi in August 1967.

With CAPAB he did Kom Spook By My (March 1968), Kohout's August, August, August (1970). Koning Lear (1971), Die Paddas (1977), Vrede (1983),

With PACT he did Die Weerstaanbare Opkoms van Arturo Ui.

With SWAPAC he did The Double Bass (1988).

In 1981 he received the Fleur du Cap Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the industry. (See Inskip, 197*)
