Perseus and Andromeda, or the Maid and the Monster is a classical extravaganza by William Brough (1826-1870)[].

Perseus and Andromeda, or the Maid and the Monster first performed at the Royal St James Theatre, London, on 26 December 1861 and published by Thomas Hailes Lacy.

Translations and adaptations

F.C.L. Bosman (1980) lists six performances in Cape Town of a pantomime called Harlequin Prince Perseus, or The Maid and the Monster by an anonymous author. It is most likely an adapted version of Brough's play.

Performance history in South Africa

1867: Performed as the "New Grand Comic Christmas Pantomime" of Harlequin Prince Perseus, or The Maid and the Monster by the Le Roy-Duret Company in the Harrington Street Theatre on 26, 27, 28 and 30 December, followed each night by the Delicate Ground (Dance). The pantomime was long in preparation, had magnificent décor by C.J.M. Smith, wonderful mechanical effects, a corps de ballet and fine cast including T.H. Paul as "Clown", Miss Clara as "Columbine" and Mr Luin as "Harlequin".
