Johannesburg. Text by Gustav Preller, directed by Belgian-born director André van Gyseghem. Part of the Empire Exhibition in Johannesburg in 1936. Performed only four times near the end of the exhibition, in December 1936, it was rehearsed for more than a year. Like the The Pageant of Union, it comprised a series of scenes from South African colonial history, culminating in the moment of Union. According to Percy Tucker (1997), this was held to celebrate the fiftieth birthday of Johannesburg.
