P.W. Laidler

(1885-1945) Medical doctor, writer, journalist and social historian. Laidler (1885-1945), was an author and medical practitioner in East London.

Born Percy Ward Laidler in **. ** He practiced as doctor and died in East London.

He was at one time editor of the SAMJ. Besides his academic writings on medical matters, which included

South Africa: its medical history 1652-1898. A medical and social study by Percy Ward Laidler and Michael Gelfand (published in Cape Town by C. Struik, 1971)

His social and historical works include:

"Hottentot and Bushman pottery of South Africa." South African Journal of Science, 1929,XXVI.

The Growth and government of Cape Town (1939)

A tavern of the ocean: being a social and historical sketch of Cape Town from its earliest days (Maskew Miller Limited, 1926);

A medical doctor and at one time President of the Public Health committee of the South African Medial Association. Dr Percy Ward Laidler (1885-1945), was an author and medical practitioner in East London. Amongst his notes on diverse subjects, are some on medicine and medical men in World War II.

Annals of the Cape Stage (Edinburgh: William Bryce, 1926), a volume which is still an invaluable source for historians of South African theatre.
