Mooi Street Moves

Mooi Street Moves is a play by Paul Slabolepszy (1948-).

The original text

A satirical play in which savvy urban black shepherds hapless white men lost in the new urban environment of post-apartheid South Africa.

The extended two-act version was published in Slabolepszy: Mooi Street and Other Moves (Witwatersrand University Press), 1994. Also published in Drama for a New South Africa by Indiana University Press.

Performance history in South Africa

1992: First produced at the Grahamstown Festival as a one-act play in 1992 with the actors Martin le Maitre and Seputla Sebogodi, Zane Maes directed by Salobepszy and assisted by Lara Foot.

1993: In 1993 a second, two act version was developed with the actors Martin le Maitre and Seputla Sebogodi for the Market Theatre and Foot/Paul Productions, staged in the Laager Theatre, 27 January - 27 February 1993, again directed by the author, assisted by Lara Foot.

2002: Staged, in an updated version, at the Grahamstown Festival in 2002, directed by Mncedisi Shabangu, with Antony Coleman (Henry) and Peter Mashigo (Stix). In November/December 2002 the same production ( presented by the Collective Theatre Company) was staged in the Laager at the Market Theatre.

Performance history outside South Africa

1993: Performed by the original cast at the Theatre der Welt festival in Munich in June 1993. Also staged at MetroStage in Alexandria, Virginia, USA in September 1993, produced and directed by Carolyn Griffin and starring Doug Brown and Jeffrey Yates.

1994: Performed by Martin le Maitre and Zane Meas at the Glasgow Mayfest in 1994. The play won several awards, e.g. the Paper Boat Award for Best Production (Mayfest, Scotland, 1994).

Staged at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1994? 2002: Directed: Mncedisi Shabangu. Cast : Antony Coleman, Peter Mashigo.
