Money

Money is a comedy in five acts by Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873)[1].

The original text

The play premièred in London at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, on 8 December 1840 and the first American production took place at the Old Park Theater in New York on 1 February 1841.

The original text was published in 1840 by Saunders and Otley of Conduit Street, London, and the American production text of 1846 was published by Samuel French in New York in (as French's Standard Drama No VIII).

Translations and adaptations

In the play was twice adapted into a silent film, the first released in 1915 by the Biograph Company, USA, and the second in 1921, by the Ideal company, directed by Duncan McRae.

Performance history in South Africa

1858: Performed as Money, or Rich and Poor by Sefton Parry and his company in the Cape Town Theatre, Harrington Street, Cape Town, on 16 March, with "the celebrated romance of Jock Rugg with the celebrated Burlesque of Statues", sung by J.E.H. English, and The Loan of a Lover (Planché) as an afterpiece.

1858: Performed as Money, or Rich and Poor by Sefton Parry and his company in the Cape Town Theatre, Harrington Street, Cape Town, on 15 April, with a "Comic Romance" sung by J.E.H. English, and Your Life's in Danger (Morton) as an afterpiece.

1860: Performed as Money by Sefton Parry and his company in the Cape Town Theatre, Harrington Street, Cape Town, on 23 April, with a dance by Miss Powell and an unnamed farce.

1861: Performed as Money, or Rich and Poor by Sefton Parry and his company in the Theatre Royal, Harrington Street, Cape Town, on 25 July, with Box and Cox, or Lodgings for Two (Morton) as an afterpiece.

1875: Performed as Money by Disney Roebuck and his company in the Bijou Theatre, Cape Town, on 5 May.

1876: Performed as Money by Disney Roebuck and his company in the Theatre Royal, Burg Street, Cape Town, on 26 July.

1888-9 Performed as Money by Lillian Beddard and her company in South Africa, with Beddard as "Clara Douglas". Among the cities played were Johannesburg (the Theatre Royal, 10-14 June), Kimberley and Cape Town (the Exhibition Theatre).
