He was born in Yorkshire, England, on 9 October 1938. His family moved to South Africa when he was seven and he grew up and matriculated in Krugersdorp. He majored in English literature and history at the University of the Witwatersrand. He became deputy editor of tbe ''Financial Mail'' in 1987 and retired in 2003, but remained on as a consultant for a few years. He died in Johannesburg in July 2015, aged 76.

Biography

He was born in Yorkshire, England, on 9 October 1938. His family moved to South Africa when he was seven and he grew up and matriculated in Krugersdorp. He majored in English literature and history at the University of the Witwatersrand.
