The Meurant family

There are a number of people with this surname who were briefly involved in 19th century theatre in South Africa. Quite how they are linked is uncertain, though it seems possible that the person F.C.L. Bosman (1928) lists as L. Meurant or simply as Meurant, may have been the original Swiss immigrant father of Louis Henri Meurant (the later journalist and language activist) and Miss L. Meurant, both of whom performed in French and Dutch plays in Cape Town as children in 1825.

From tis, it would appear that the father may have been a dance and music instructor in Cape Town in the first decade of the 19th century, till his untimely death round about 1926.
