Matthew Wild (19*-). Actor, playwright and director.


Studies

Studied drama at the University of Cape Town. Winner of the Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for Most Promising Student in 2000.

Contribution to South African theatre

He shot to fame as playwright with his play More, then co-wrote Sylvia The Librarian (2001);

As an actor he played the roles of "Dionysos" in The Bacchae (2002), "Father Vincent" in Cry, The Beloved Country (2003) and "Oedipus" in Jocasta Rising in 2004.

As a director he initially worked with Cape Town Opera (as Assistant Director), assisting with the devising of Artscape's New Day, which he also directed. Other directorial projects to follow have included Witnesses (Artscape, 2005), Dalliances (Artscape, 2008 – Best Director Award, International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival),The Rocky Horror Show, Il viaggio a Reims, Comedy of Errors, Cabaret (Fugard Theatre, 2015), West Side Story (at ArtsCape, 2015)

In 2015 he was appointed as the Artistic Director of Cape Town Opera.
