Matheson Lang (Alexander Matheson) (1879-1948) [1]. Eminent actor-manager and dramatist.

Career

Born in Canada. He was educated at Inverness College and the University of St Andrews. He learnt his trade with Frank Benson, Lily Langtry and Ellen Terry. His first real successes were as performer in The Christian (1907) and some fine performances in Romeo and Juliet. Went on to make his name as a popular and prominent performer of Shakespeare and modern work in England.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

He and his wife Huton Britton toured South Africa with his own company (as part of a tour of the empire) in 1911-1912. He played Shakespeare and modern romantic drama.
