Biography

Masasa Lindiwe Mbangeni was born and bred in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth). She studied at Stageworld Theatre School and also holds a BA in Dramatic Arts (Directing & Performance Studies) from the University of the Witwatersrand. She is a former Mandela Rhodes Scholar. Masasa has a special interest in promoting the transformative power of the arts.

Theatre

Romeo and Juliet ("Benvolio") at the Port Elizabeth Opera House and Guy Butler Theatre (April, May 2005)

The Canterbury Tales at the Guy Butler Theatre (July 2005)

She played "Queeny" in Fugard's Nongogo at the Soweto Theatre (2013) and again at the Market Theatre and on tour at the Berkeley Street Theatre Downstairs in Toronto, Canada (2015)

Television and Film

Masasa is known for her work as "Thembeka" on etv flagship soapie, Scandal, as well as appearances on TV in The River, Legacy, Harvest, Housekeepers, The Republic, Hard Copy, Thola and Silent Witness.

She has also appeared in several feature films, including I Am All Girls (2021), The Red Sea Diving Resort (2019) and Machine Gun Preacher (2011).

Awards

She won the Best Actress Award at the 2015 SAFTA and Royalty Soapie Awards.
