Marie zápasí s anděly (1980) ("Maria's Struggle with the Angels") is a play by Pavel Kohout (1928-*) [1].


The original text

Set in Prague, the play is about about the life of the theatre actress and dissident Vlasta Chramostová[2]. Written and first performed in 1981. The text published in Prague by Dilia, 1990.

Translations and adaptations

Translated into Afrikaans by Fred Steyn as 'n Stryd met Engele, also referred to as Maria en haar Stryd met die Engele.

Made into a 988 tv film called Gli Angeli del potere ("The Angels of Power"), directed Giorgio Albertazzi with music by Ennio Morricone.[3]

Performance history in South Africa

1982: Performed in Afrikaans as 'n Stryd met Engele by TRUK Toneel under the direction of William Egan at the State Theatre, Pretoria and at the Alexander Theatre, Johannesburg. The cast: Wilna Snyman (Maria), Louis van Niekerk (Josef), Amor Tredoux, Annelize van der Ryst, Marie Pentz, Alida Theron, Aletta Bezuidenhout, Paul Lückhoff, Rika Sennett, Karin Jerg, Elzabé Zietsman, Nico Liebenberg, Johan Malherbe, Eric Nobbs, Schalk Schoombee. Design by Chris van den Berg, lighting by Paul Pamboukian.
