Marie Tempest (1864-1942) was a famous British actress.

Biography

Born Mary Susan Etherington in in London on 15 July 1864.

Between 1914-1921, she toured America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Singapore, China, Japan and the Philippines with her own company.

She died on 15 October 1942.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Her period in South Africa (1918-1919) saw productions of many of her standard repertoire of plays, including Mrs Dot (Maugham), Penelope (Maugham), and The Duke of Killiekrankie () in 1918 and Mary Goes First () in 1919, at His Majesty’s Theatre in Johannesburg.
