Marat/Sade (Its full title: The Persecution and Assassination of Marat as performed by the Inmates of the Asylum at Charenton under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade) by Peter Weiss. A play about revolution, best described as complex, challenging and disturbing. First produced by ** in 19**. This landmark play was (first??) performed in South Africa in 1972 by Barney Simon for ***? In March 1973 it was chosen as the central production of MDALI’s Black Arts Festival. In 1976 Simon did another version of the play with The Company as opening production in the Market Theatre main theatre on October 19th. The play was also popular training vehicle for Drama Departments throughout the 1970s. Other productions directed by Mavis Taylor (Baxter Theatre, 1980).
