Liz Yates
Liz Yates was an actress and festival director with PEMADS in Port Elizabeth.
Early Life
Born on December 8, 1945, in Dunfermline, Scotland. Her family came to South Africa in 1948 and she enrolled as a pupil at Jeppe Girl's High School where she first became involved in theatre. At first she painted sets and was generally involved in acting and backstage work and for about four years she was involved in one play per year. Her first job straight after school was with the Standard Bank for a couple of years before joining W. J. Greig on the Stock Exchange. Then, at the age of 18, she received a job offer from Strauss Turnbull, also involved on the Stock Exchange, to go work in London. Later, she was the Johannesburg Sales Representative for Valley Textiles and used to commute between Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg. She moved to Port Elizabeth permanently in the 1980s. Not knowing anybody, she went to an audition.
Contribution to South African Theatre
November 24 - December 4, 1982: Played the role of Mrs Ernest W Stanley in PEMADS's production of The Man Who Came to Dinner. Directed by Noel Morgan.
1983: Played the role of Sister Rita in The Runner Stumbles, directed by Jean Young for the Salters Cup Festival.
1988:Liz became the Festival Director of the Salters One Act Play Festival.
March 1 - 11, 1989 (1988?): Starred as Hilary in Tribute, produced by PEMADS, directed by Gill Brewis at the Ford Little Theatre in Port Elizabeth.
