The play was written in German with the title Leonce und Lena. It was first performed in Munich in 1895 by an amateur group.

The plays of Georg Buchner translated by Victor Price from Gesamtausgabe der Werke und Briefe von Georg Buchner edited by Fritz Bergemann. Contents: Danton's Death, Leonce and Lena, Woyzeck. Oxford University Press, 1971.

Afrikaans translation by Wilma Stockenström titled Leonce en Lena.

Another Afrikaans translation by Tjaart Potgieter is titled Die Opstand van die Narre.

Performance history in South Africa

Die Opstand van die Narre was presented by TRUK Toneel at the Momentum Theatre, Pretoria, directed by Dieter Reible in 1986 starring Louis van Niekerk, Frans Kalp, Charlotte Butler, Eric Nobbs, Ilse van Hemert, Cas van Rensburg, Gert van Niekerk, Peter Terry, Percy Pretorius, Ronel Kriel, Cas van Rensburg. Design, lighting and costumes by James MacNamara.
